Iapos;ve noticed it more lately: men coming into womenapos;s spaces and telling them "youapos;re doing it wrong. Do it MY way."

Iapos;m sure it happens all the time, every day to every woman, but two recent incidents stick out.
1)
On Dear Author, they refer to it as the Lee and Ann Show. The ongoing argument between Ann Sommerville and Lee Goldberg about the legitimacy of womenapos;s writing, particularly fannish writing.

Lee Goldberg has a noted antipathy to fanfiction. This is likely because he makes his living writing pro-fic and when people give away the same profuct, his sales fall. He cloaks it in terms of theft and copyright and such. But at base, he is anti-fanfiction. He has never said a word about fan films or any predominantly MALE way of interacting with the text, only fanfiction, which tends to be dominated by women. He especially loathes slash, mocking it mercilessly in ways that reveal a deep-seated vein of homophobia, which is a majority-female pursuit.

Lately, heapos;s taken to pointing and mocking at erotic romance e-book sales on his blog. This is another field written by women for women. Why isnapos;t he going to Tor and telling people like John Scalzi that Old Manapos;s War is never going to do anything in e-book? Oh, yeah, because itapos;s so much easier to sneer at some unknown woman who just sold Hot Manly Lovinapos;.

He has flat out said that fannish writing should be consigned to trunks, and that women should really try writing something useful.

2) On a certain writerapos;s LJ, a certain male reader made the comment she was "wasting her talent" writing erotica, because it doesnapos;t sell. The conversation moved to a different LJ. His whole attitude came off "silly, stupid women, let me show you how to make real money." He ran down the romance and erotuic romance genres at every turn and did eveything but scream "you stupid bitches, do it MY way" He was polite enough, but it was Nice Guy(tm) polite, superior and condescending with a side of "I canapos;t let them provoke me."

In neither case was there respect for the stories women are telling, or even the concept that they have stories to tell. Because clearly they have the pen-is, which makes them superior writers.

It reminded me of the Elmore Leonard rules (here, learn to write like ME), but blunter.

They told him Friday that heapos;d probably be able to go home Sunday. Saturday morning, they told him that, since heapos;d been disconnected from all of his IVs, monitors, etc, heapos;d be able to take a shower in the afternoon. Then, around lunch time, his heart decided to act up. His pulse wasnapos;t in a dangerous range, but it wouldnapos;t stay put - it kept going up and down. They decided they needed to give him an IV. This is a problem with Dad - heapos;s always had trouble with needles, partially because his veins move (for the surgery Wednesday, all but one of his IVs were done AFTER we was under.) The first nurse couldnapos;t get the IV in. Neither could the second. Or the third. It took 4 nurses.
The medicine they gave him is called Amiodarone. They pumped the first bag in in about 10 minutes, then set a second bag on a slow drip. Mom was pretty worried during this, so Karen I found someone to watch the kids, and went down there. He had settled down some by the time we got there, but they went ahead hooked up an external pacemaker. Everything settled down, and we came on home eventually. I talked to Mom late this afternoon, and she said they had taken him off the IV because his heart rate had briefly dropped below 40. Heapos;s doing pretty good again, though. Heapos;s disappointed, though, because he didnapos;t get his shower he has to stay until at least Monday now.

Today, and yesterday, I realized a couple things:1. Iapos;ve matured a lot. And 2. My life has gotten somewhat better. Shocker?Same, same. Alright, yeah, Iapos;ve matured a lot. I donapos;t know how, but Iam. I still have that obnoxious laugh and loud voice to keep it upbeat, but, you know, I quite frankly think that Iapos;ve grown up a lot. I canapos;t explain it - thereapos;s a lot that I canapos;t explain. But, itapos;s true. Okay, my life has gotten somewhat better?yeah, my mom and I are getting along, kind of. And, really, Iapos;m trying and so are my friends trying to make an effort (although I feel somewhat ignored). Well, that always happens. I always think my friends have this thing against me and I wish I knew. So much. I know something is wrong. How can it not be?I know, I should be positive, but this is true. It really is... -sigh.

So Ifound out that Sara is an Ares. Iapos;m supposed to really get along with Ares people.

...I suppose, too, that itapos;s entirely possible that her religious psuedo-involvement and a general lack of willingness to accept her own actions *REALLY*killed our interaction. That, and while I looked good, I was a completely relationship-incapable at the time. (Some, most even, might beg the question of whatapos;s changed. *rueful chuckle*) Ares.. Damn. Iapos;dapos;ve never picked her for an Ares.. But then, Iapos;dapos;ve never picked Then-Me for largely giving a damn about who she was beyond (or as a part of)the Drama Queen Whoreslut Iwas dating. My. And Katieapos;s a Virgo.. Which puts a lot of things into perspective, but really breaks my theory about me and Virgo women (other than that we just donapos;t work well together as a partnership unit; however she has proven that we can be friends.. Good friends, if taken in whole.)

Interesting. So, anyone, by chance, know any pagan/atheist-leaning Ares ladies?*Grins*

There was one a poem in one of the Chicken Soup for Teens books about a girl and a boy that had broken up, and next time they meet they hug. The poem is told in two voices-- hers, which believes they are going to reunite "we held each other again" and his, in which he grumbles about having to put up with her.

I canapos;t remember the title, and I donapos;t know which volume itapos;s in. Anyone in the know? Ithink it would be a neat thing to use to teach the trait of Voice.

Thanks
